The Changing of the Guard

by Mat Bitner

Just like the seasons, things change at Simply Mac. At the very least, it keeps things exciting and new, but at the same time it’s difficult to say goodbye to those with whom we’ve shared so many memories.

Amy Morby, our beloved graphic designer, blog writer and contest organizer, has parted ways with Simply Mac for greener grass and bluer skies. Amy worked with Simply Mac for almost a year and a half and her first blog post was for a contest giveaway, which just goes to show the kind of foundation she started here. While we at Simply Mac take some time to wish her well in all her future endeavors, I want to assure all our fans that the Simply Mac blog will continue to bring you all the fun and information to which you’ve grown so accustomed.

My name is Mat Bitner, and I have been with Simply Mac for nearly three years. I started as a Product Consultant, then an instructor in our awesome Simply Answers program, next to our Downtown store as Assistant Manager, and finally where I am now as Simply Mac’s Customer Experience Strategist. I’ll be taking up the mantel Amy left behind and hope to bring you all the latest in the world of Apple, as well as provide new information about the Macs you currently own.

If you start having Amy “withdraws,” hit up her website to satiate your cravings. Best of luck Amy.

Real Racing 2 Comes to the Mac

by Mat Bitner

Anybody with an iDevice (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) will more than likely have played, or at the very least seen the high octane racing simulator game Real Racing. It’s sequel, ingeniously titled Real Racing 2, has been one of the best selling games in the mobile App Store. Looking to capitalize on the success of its mobile versions, Electronic Arts has brought the stellar graphics and addictive play of Real Racing 2 to the Mac App Store.

What sets this version apart is the ability to control the game via iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You can also play using your keyboard, or even a trackpad. To play with your iDevice, you just tilt it like a steering wheel and you can experience the thrill of controlling your on screen car with your handheld device.

All the setup instructions are in the game’s control settings, and I found it relatively simple to get racing with my iMac being controlled by my iPhone 4. Real Racing 2 currently retails in the Mac App Store for $12.99

Get rid of the annoying red badge in iOS

by Amy Morby

Here’s a little tip for anyone that is crazy like me and hates those little red bages in iOS. Sure, I’m all for it in the Mail app, but when it comes to Family Feud and Nyan Cat, I definitely don’t need red badges pestering me. Wait, am I the only one that gets annoyed by this? Maybe. But if you hate it, too, then there’s an easy way to fix it.

Go to Settings > Notifications and scroll down to select the app you’d like to disable the notification for. Scroll down to “Badge App Icon” and swipe it to “off.” You are now red-badge-of-discontent free!

While you’re in there, you’ll also notice that you can still show alerts in the notification center, but you just won’t get the stupid red badges.

Siri Coming to iPad?

by Amy Morby

Word on the street is that the iOS 5.1 beta 3 dropped some sneaky little hints about dictation coming to iPad. A developer looking through the iPad settings found a new section called “About Privacy and Dictation.” When opened, this section brings up the legal mumbo jumbo for Siri dictation.

While Siri isn’t actually up and running on the beta, rumor has it that we might just see it in iOS 5.1 OR perhaps an iPad 3 exclusive. Of course, all of this could just be leftover code from the iPhone 4S, but it certainly would be pretty spectacular to get Siri on the iPad, no?

Zoom it in, Lion!

by Amy Morby

If your trusty eyes are failing you or if you just really want to get up close and personal with your pixels, you can zoom your screen in OS X Lion with a couple of keyboard shortcuts.

Firstly, however, you have to enable zooming. In previous versions of Mac OS X, screen zooming was turned on by default. In 10.7, zooming is turned off by default, so you’re going to need to enable it before you get all zoom crazy.

Enabling Screen Zoom

1. Open System Preferences

2. Select Universal Access and click “Seeing.”

3. Check the box under “Zoom” to “On”

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, you can zoom using your trackpad, mouse, or keyboard.

  • For trackpads and your mouse, just hold Control + Scroll up for zooming in and Control + Scroll down for zooming out.
  • And with the keyboard, it’s Command + Option + = to zoom in and Command + Option + - to zoom out.

Have fun zooming!
